How to Care for Your Indigo Clothing

Our jackets and other garments are hand-dyed using 100% natural indigo — an ancient pigment made entirely from plants. Each piece carries its own depth of colour, texture, and beauty.

Because the dye is natural, it will rub off easily at first — especially onto your hands or lighter clothing. This is part of the authentic indigo process, not a fault.

1. Wash before wearing

We strongly recommend washing your jacket at least once (ideally twice) before first wear.

Turn inside out before washing to reduce colour bleeding and achieve a more even fade.
Use a mild, natural, or denim detergent.

Hand washing is the gentlest option.

Wash separately and rinse several times in cool water until the water runs clear. You may need to repeat this process before the dye settles fully.

Machine washing

Alternatively, use a cool machine wash (below 30°C) on a gentle cycle.

The spin cycle can create subtle creases or a softly worn patina in the colour — a natural “crocking” effect where the dye lightens along folds or seams. Some people love this gentle, lived-in finish; others prefer to keep their indigo deeper and more even.

If you’d rather avoid it, stop your machine before the spin or use the lowest spin speed. Either way, a machine wash will help release excess dye, meaning less colour transfer when you wear it.

2. Take care around light fabrics

Even after a few washes, some indigo may continue to transfer onto lighter colours — especially white shirts or upholstery.

Hang to dry naturally, away from direct sunlight.

3. Embrace the imperfections

The beauty of natural indigo lies in its life — its ability to shift, soften, and tell stories through wear. Each fade and mark becomes part of your garment’s unique character.

Further tips

Do not dry clean: the harsh chemicals used can damage natural dye.
To reduce rubbing or fading: try a gentle vinegar soak to help set the dye, use colour catchers, or place your garment in a mesh laundry bag during washing.
